Historical What-Ifs

Sometimes, the course of History can be changed if something different happens. Suppose how things in our country would have went if…

1: George Washington decided to stay in retirement at Mount Vernon and declined either to lead the Continental Army in 1775 or accept the presidency in 1789.

2: After the South seceded, they either won the Civil War, or the North decided to say “Seeya” and peace was  made, and there were 2 countries.

3: Had Lincoln survived, would Reconstruction had have been easier? Or would the Radical Republicans impeached him for his leniency towards the South as they actually did to Andrew Johnson.

4: Had the election of 1876 not been stolen by the Republicans, how would a Tillman presidency been?

5: Had the Republicans not been divided in 1912, could Taft, If reelected, or Teddy Roosevelt if his campaign been sucessful prevented the US from entering World War 1?

6:  If FDR had been defeated for reelection in 1936 or decided not to run for a 3rd term in 1940, could his successors have kept us out of WW2?

7: Had FDR not died in April 1945, would he have authorized the dropping of the Atomic Bombs?

8: Suppose we had not dropped the Bomb, and we had to invade Japan, how much time would it have taken and how many lives would have been lost?

9: If  JFK had not been shot, and served 2 terms, would Viet Nam have ended earlier?  Civil Rights legistation passed?  would we have had Nixon elected in 1968?

10: If not for Iran, would we be saying “Ronald Who?”

11: see no 4, Change it to 2000 election, how would Al Gore have been as president?

12: If not for 9/11 would GW Bush been reelected?

The Possibilities are endless..

Another Fallen Star

The Death of Amy Winehouse is another in the list of Celebrities who have died from drug and alcohol abuse.  Why is it they have the need to get high? Stress? Pressure? This should be a wake up call to kids to insist on being fans of these people, and want to imitate them.

Budget Battles

In negotiations of all types, some give and take is required. Perhaps the President and Congress should remember this while negotiating the budget and debt ceiling.  You can have your tax cuts and I’ll keep my programs is a good example.

The Jury Has Spoken

Like it or not, Casey Anthony was found not guilty of the Murder of her 2 year old Daughter Caylee.  The American Justice System worked to perfection, though. The Prosecution and Defense showed their witnesses and evidence, the jury weighed the evidence, and found the prosecution lacking. There was simply not enough evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that Casey did it.  Like it or not, that is how our system is supposed to work.  If you don’t like it, try getting the Constitution changed.  There were no winners in this case.  Little Caylee is still dead, a family and a state torn apart.  Some advice to Casey:  Keep your nose clean, because everyone will be watching your every move. Quit partying,  lay off the men, and try to make amends with your family, if possible.

Walking On Eggshells

One thing I can’t stand is people who you have to walk on eggshells around. There are people who make mountains out of molehills, and any little thing you say sets them off.  They can be jealous that their lives are bad compared to other people’s (Or at least that’s what they think) , they also think that criticism is abuse, and also, they constantly say that people are out to get them, and when they move, they accuse their new neighbors of doing the exact same things.  They are never happy about anything. What do you do about those people?  At some point, do you tell them “Listen, life is not fair, get over it and get on with your life?

Getting Thrown Under The Bus

Casey Anthony has thrown her family under the bus!  Not a bus, but an Optimus Prime sized 18 wheeler.  She either hates her family so much that she’d let them take the blame for her crimes, or they’re too dumb enough to realize what’s going on.  Personally, If I had been accused by my Daughter of molesting her, then helping cover up the accidental death of my Grand Daughter, and I knew that I had done neither, I would disown her in a heartbeat.  And I would also disown my Wife and Son for expecting me to fall on my sword and take the blame.  This puts the dysfunction in dysfunctional family

What Was He Thinking?

Note to Anthony Wiener:

Why did you decide to ruin your career and possibly your marriage by sending out lewd pics to women via Twitter?  You have some serious problems!  Didn’t you learn anything by what happened to your fellow New Yorker Chris Lee?  You should resign from the House as soon as possible. Since your Wife is pregnant with your first child, you don’t need the pressures of office to interfere with an attempt to fix your marriage, and become a better husband and parent.

Taking Responsibility

After watching the Defense’s opening statement in the Casey Anthony case, What ever happened to Personal Responsibility?  Too many people use excuses to try to get out of paying the price for their crimes or mistakes.  Just because you had a bad childhood, were abused, your parents didn’t  treat you right, or any other number or excuses, that’s no reason to not be punished.  Just man up and admit your mistakes. Cover ups usually get you in more trouble then the original action.  There are lots of people who have had bad things happen to them and don’t use it as a crutch!

No man is above the law

With the arrest of now former IMF President Dominique Strauss-Kahn in New York this week on rape charges, it confirms the statement that no man is above the law.  No matter how rich you are, what political position you hold, or what other station in life you hold, the law is the law!   You do the crime, no amount of money or fame should make you immune from prosecution.  On the flip side, just because you’re poor does not mean that you can’t have legal help if you’re accused of a crime.

The Next “Trial Of The Century”?

This week begins the Casey Anthony trial.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with this case, Casey Anthony is a Florida woman on trial for the 2008 murder of her 2 year old daughter Caylee.  Casey has a lot of things going against her. First, she waited 1 month before she told anyone that Caylee was missing.  Second, She is a total liar. She came up with this story that the Nanny was the kidnapper, and a lot of other falsehoods. Also, she is a thief, having swiped money from both her Grandmother and her best friend.  And third, she has as a lawyer a guy who is only looking for publicity, not someone you want representing you in a death penalty case.  But, he’ll be a miracle worker if he can pull it out. Even though she’s considered innocent until proven otherwise, if this isn’t a slam dunk case, what is? Though that’s what they said about OJ…..

Bye Bye Bin Laden

You gotta give props to everyone involved in the operation to get Osama. From the President who authorized it, to the Intel agents who tracked him down and got confirmation that it was Bin Laden, to the Navy SEALS that carried out the strike. The 2 amazing things where that secrecy was totally maintained until after the deed was done, and that the only American loss was a copter.  It’s good that Bin Laden is dead, but vigilance needs to be maintained. There are still terrorists out there gunning for us, and Al Quaida will be out for revenge because of the loss of their leader. We can’t let our guard down one bit!

Off To A Good Start!

My Baltimore Orioles Are 1-0 after a 4-1 opening night win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Hopefully this is the start of a good season, ending the O’s 13 straight losing seasons. We have the sluggers in Vlad Guerrero, Mark Reynolds (If he can cut down on his strikeouts and hit more the .190), Nick Markakis, and J.J. Hardy, and speed in Brian Roberts and Adam Jones. Hopefully the young starting pitchers behind Jeremy Guthrie, who pitched 8 shutout innings tonight will improve. The Relief corps is much improved, with 4 guys (Kevin Gregg, Koji Uehara, Jeremy Accardo, and Mike Gonzalez) who have closing experience.  Soooo, let’s see How Buck and the Boys do this season, it will be fun to watch!

Can’t We All Get Along?

It seems like these days, people of different religions have a hard time getting along with each other.  Some of the more extreme members of all faiths think that they are better then everyone else, and those that don’t believe they way they do are trash and don’t deserve to live.  If they all sat down and had a deep discussion, it’s possible that these groups could find that there is a lot that they do agree with.  Also, respect is needed! Just because a person is a member of a certain religious group or has no faith at all does not mean that they are a bad person.  Just something to think about….

How to ruin a political career-by Chris Lee

1: Say you’re a divorced lobbyist, when in actuality you’re married with a kid.

2: Advertise in Craigslist that you’re looking for a woman

4: Use your own personal email account with your real name to converse with the lady who bit on your ad.

2 Cents Worth

This Article is about Ron Flanagan, A Vietnam vet who is suffering from Cancer, and whose bone marrow transplant is being delayed because his wife made out the check for his insurance premium for 2 cents less than what it should have been. Because of that 2 cent error, his insurance was cancelled!  Thank goodness this has been resolved, but that's not the point.  Have our corporations become so anal that they would endanger someone's life over 2 cents?  Mr. Flanagan has to get back on the transplant list, and hopefully, he won't have to wait long.

Civility

Political speech seems to have degraded into a shouting, name calling match like a bunch of school kids.  Just because we differ on political views does not necessarily  mean that one person is right and the other one is wrong.  A Democrat's idea might be just as good as a Republican's, though they may differ.  This does not give the 2 sides the right to go calling each other's names, and stir up their followers into a frenzy. This sometimes convinces the followers that violence is the only way to get their point through.  Back in the old times,  Politicians respected their political rivals, and when they disagreed  with them , they tried to hash our their differences, and when they couldn't, they just agreed to disagree, and let the matter rest.  People of both parties should try to imitate their predecessors in that respect.  The public is getting turned off by these antics. They elected their Senators and Congresspeople to do the work they're supposed to do, not bicker and act like babies.

My Funniest Real Live Christmas Story

Back in ‘85, my Mom won a trip to the Bahamas from her work.  It was scheduled for the Christmas/New Year’s holiday.  So, Mom and Dad got on the plane and headed to Miami to get to the cruise ship.  During the flight, Dad found out he wasn’t much of a flyer, and freaked out.  Well, they got to the ship and had a great time on the cruise, but when it was time to head back home, Dad wanted nothing to do with flying. So they decided to rent a car. However, since it was New year’s there were no cars in Miami to rent, all they could find was a U-haul truck.  So they drove that all the way back to Virginia.  Meanwhile, my Christmas that year was mostly a bust, because I had to stay at my Sister’s in West Va where we live now.  It was totally boring, because a few days before Thanksgiving, Moorefield had flooded, wiping out most of the town, and there wasn’t much to do.  Whenever I need a laugh, I think back to the whole thing.

Disrespect for our Fallen Soldiers and a Classy Woman

It is disgusting what Fred Phelps and his crew are doing!  He is the so called pastor of a church in Kansas who goes around picketing the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. These “Christians” say that its God’s revenge for the US accepting gays.  And they are also planning on picketing Elizabeth Edward’s funeral. Damn, let the poor lady rest in peace, after what she went through!  I’m a fan of freedom of speech, but have a little compassion!

Second Chances

This year in sports, there have been 2 shining examples of people making the most of  a second chance.  Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton missed 2 years in the middle of the decade due to drug and Alcohol abuse, and came back with a tremendous season last season, and was named the American League MVP.  In Football, Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Michael Vick spent 18 months in Federal prison for dog fighting,  has become a model citizen, and in having a monster season.  The moral of this story is no one is beyond redemption, and we need to be a bit more forgiving, both public figures, and friends and family in our own lives.

Another Funny From My Childhood

I think I learned how to read before anything else.  In 1st or 2nd grade, we had reading books that we did activities in.  I got way ahead of everyone else, so the teacher sent a note to my Mom telling her to slow me down! Better then a note saying I was being bad...

HELL NO.  People, if you’re gonna think bad about everything, you deserved to be depressed, and if you’re gonna complain about everything and not listen to advice, SHUT UP!

The Evils Of Facebook?

This article  is about A New Jersey pastor who ordered the married members of his staff to get rid of their Facebook accounts or face being fired.  He thinks that this is too much temptation and will cause them to have affairs with old flames, or start an affair with a new person.  In our opinion, this is going a bit too far.  An employer has no right to tell an employee what they can do in their private time. Also, if a person has to start an affair, whether it's online or otherwise, their marriage might already have problems. Sounds like those who think that kids that watch a lot of tv and play a lot of video games are automatically going to become violent.

Losing Their Faith

I was reading this article  about 2 ministers that have abandoned Christianity and became Athiests, but still perform their church duties.  My question is: if you don't believe in God anymore, why be the spiritual advisor and minister to people who do believe?  It's a good thing that these guys didn't want their identities to be shown, or else they would be in big trouble!  The idea of an Athiest being a minister is like a Republican being given a leadership role in the Democratic party.

Happy Banned Book Week!

I was interested to see that this is Banned Book Week.  In a country with freedom of speech and expression like the US, you'd think that the idea of banning books would not exist. But sadly, it's here.  My opinion: I know that some subjects are not appropriate for certain age groups, and there are subjects that you may disagree with , and that's OK. If you don't like it, DON'T READ IT!!!!   If I want to read something, I have the right to do so, without you putting your nose in my affairs. DON'T FORCE YOUR  MORALITY ON ME!  You take away 1 freedom, and the rest will follow...
